Despite common opinion, research shows that napping is actually good for most people. As if you didn’t already need an excuse to, here’s 3 reasons why.
There’s plenty of advice out there about napping and whether it’s good or bad — and quite frankly, this only makes things even more confusing. Quite often we feel the need to recharge our batteries with a little siesta now and again, but at the same time, there’s a plethora of studies, opinion-pieces, and sleep-hygiene experts advising against it.
So what’s the deal? Well, research to date shows that napping, when done the right way, can be beneficial for both your mind and body.
The proven benefits of a power nap
According to researchers from Harvard Medical School, napping isn’t the detriment to a proper night’s sleep we’ve been frequently told, and can actually improve your overall quality of sleep — along with a number of other benefits to your health and wellbeing.
In fact, studies have shown that napping is the healthiest alternative to turning to the likes of energy drinks, caffeine, and sugar to compensate for lost sleep. And being constantly tired because you aren’t getting enough sleep can also raise the odds for suffering from chronic diseases like obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, and depression.
With that being said, the key is to keep it short. Twenty to thirty minutes seems to be the sweet spot. Napping for hours at a time can have adverse effects and lead to sleep inertia — the post-sleep grogginess that can be difficult to shake off.
So yeah, napping when you need to is definitely better than powering through spells of having no energy until bedtime.
But before you go and hit the sack for a quick one, here are 3 more reasons why napping is good for you:
You know how your energy dips in the afternoon? And you feel lethargic, sleepy and start to lose focus. It’s nothing uncommon and happens to all of us when we’re overly busy, or we fall behind on a good night’s sleep.
Well, a quick nap between 20 to 30 minutes can bring you back up to speed and restore your sense of alertness. So put away those energy drinks and get your head down!
Productivity isn’t purely about how efficiently you manage your time, it’s about how you manage your energy.
Jumping straight off from the previous point, we’re unproductive when we get tired and unfocussed. Unsurprisingly, this has a negative impact on our productivity. But a 2002 Harvard University study demonstrated a thirty-minute nap boosted the performance of workers, returning their productivity to beginning-of-the-day levels.
Reduces the risk of heart disease
Perhaps most interesting to note, a 2007 study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine showed that those who take a midday nap at least three times a week are 37 percent less likely to die of heart disease.
